Two million women around the world suffer from obstetric fistula, a preventable condition which leaves women incontinent due to damage caused by obstructed labor. Worse than the physical pain, however, is the community and even family rejection that ensues if a woman gives birth to a stillborn, or cannot give birth again. The documentary A Walk to Beautiful follows the lives of 5 Ethiopian women seeking treatment at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, ultimately hoping to be reintegrated into their communities.
The documentary was premiered at the Washington 2007 Silverdocs Film Festival held this past weekend in an attempt to drum up Congressional support for the Global Campaign to end Fistula, led by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). With enough support and appropriate legislation the condition could be vastly reduced worldwide and women would no longer have suffer from devastating childbirth injuries that affect their social and physical well-being.
